Humility is an awareness of my faults and a dependence on Krsna to help me with overcome them.
Humility
Excerpts on humility from Mahatma Das
Appreciation
The more we appreciate others, the more humble we become. When we think we are great, we commit spiritual suicide.
— Mahatma Das
Knowledge can cause suffering
Although knowledge potentially offers enlightenment and freedom, it can also cause suffering. When we know what we should do, and don’t do it, we feel bad or guilty for not acting.
— Mahatma Das
Be Yourself
The more there is a difference between who you are and how you want people to see you, the more you will be concerned about looking Krsna consciousness rather than being Krsna conscious.
— Mahatma Das
Humility is Attractive
Pride makes you unattractive, even to yourself. Humility is so attractive to Krsna that it melts His heart.

Self-Esteem and Humility
Studies show that people who are humble generally have high levels of self esteem, while people who are proud tend to have lower levels of self esteem.
— Mahatma Das
Humility and Low Self-Esteem
Low self-esteem is not humility. Low self-esteem means to feel unworthy of being loved. It also manifests in wanting to be (or show that we are) more than we are. Humility is positive and purely selfless, low self-esteem is negative and purely selfish.
— Mahatma Das
Humility is Bhakti
Humility is bhakti, humility is surrender, humility is prema and the ornament of prema. Humility melts the heart of the Lord.
— Mahatma Das
Looking good
Image is important to us. Some of us even portray a humble image because it makes us feel good when others think we are humble. The trap we can easily fall into is that we become more concerned about looking Krsna conscious than being Krsna conscious.
— Mahatma Das
Humility makes you strong
Low self esteem is self indulgent neurotic behavior. It is self centered and makes you weak because you have no shelter. Humility makes you strong, both because you are not thinking of yourself and because you feel helpless, and thus take more shelter of Krsna’s power.
Self-reflection
If everyone in the world were like you, what wouldn’t you like about everyone?
Being Real
The more we know, the more we realize how little we know. Similarly, the closer we come to Krsna, the more we realize how far away we really are. The more we realize how far we are from Krsna, the more we realize what is separating us from Him. The more we realize what is […]
Being Krsna conscious or looking Krsna conscious
As devotees we are tempted to get others to think we are more Krsna conscious than we really are. Yes, we may get some false satisfaction when people think we are spiritually advanced. However, the irony is that the need to be seen as advanced is what is preventing us from actually becoming advanced.
Trying to impress others
When we truly desire to become more humble, we become painfully aware of how often our actions are motivated by the desire to impress others.
